Building medical education pathways to cultivate the next generation of health care workers in Northern California 

We are facing a health crisis. Our communities experience significantly higher cancer rates, suicide rates, and overdose rates compared to the rest of the state. Yet, there aren’t enough health care workers to meet our needs. 

Despite the significant need for a steady flow of new health professionals, a career in health care feels out of reach for many in Northern California. Without local education pathways, aspiring medical professionals need to leave the area for training. Ultimately, this leads to fewer providers serving the communities who need them most.  

At Healthy Rural California, we believe everyone deserves access to quality healthcare - no matter where they live. We're addressing Northern California’s most urgent access-to-care challenges by building cradle-to-career medical pathways and training the next generation of doctors to serve our region. 

Your support helps us: 

• Recruit and retain physicians in rural communities 
• Expand Graduate Medical Education Residency Programs that create lasting solutions to the physician shortage 
• Expand our MedEd Clubs, where students explore healthcare careers, gain hands-on experiences, and are inspired to pursue medical pathways that bring them back to serve their communities 
• Build regional clerkships and rotations so that 3rd and 4th year medical students can spend more time training where care is needed 
• Strengthen partnerships that address mental health, substance use, and other critical rural health needs
