Mt Shasta Area Audubon Society

Mt. Shasta Audubon is proud to be your local Audubon Society Chapter! We are an entirely volunteer-run organization so every penny of your donation goes to enhancing and restoring habitat and raising awareness about the conservation of birds and wildlife that live here. In addition, our board and members are dedicated advocates for biological conservation, and we believe that implementing projects that improve habitat conditions is always time well spent. We are committed to making a difference. Case in point, in 2026 we reached over 1,000 people through our free field trips, presentations, and stewardship events and we provided habitat uplift for birds and other wildlife in the form of bird box installations all across Siskiyou County, native plantings, pollinator gardens and invasive weed

Our hosted activities included leading scores of field trips to view the incredible plant and wildlife species that can be found throughout the biodiversity hotspot of the Siskiyou Cascade Bioregion.  Field trips and presentations included topics ranging from birds, butterflies and dragonflies to native plants, moths, ants and the importance of dark skies for migrating birds.

For decades our members and volunteers have conducted annual Christmas Bird Counts (the world's longest-running citizen science database) in the Mt. Shasta, Yreka and Etna areas. Members also conduct wildlife surveys and collect biological data on private and public lands to support landowners in making informed land management decisions that result in meaningful bird and wildlife conservation. In addition to surveys, we have also installed and monitored close to 50 wildlife boxes on public and private lands. Supplementing habitat for bluebirds, swallows, chickadees, owls, ducks, kestrels, bats and many others resulting in hundreds of successful fledglings.

We currently have four different Siskiyou County ranches (totaling close to 10,000 acres) enrolled in the Audubon Certified Ranching Program. This is a newer program which nationally certifies ranches engaged in bird-friendly ranching. This program is intended to help our declining grassland bird species and promote conservation-minded agriculture. 

We believe in advocacy. We write letters of support, make phone calls, sign petitions and raise awareness about matters that affect our declining wildlife populations. 

We provide funding and mentoring to students interested in conservation  Mt. Shasta High School Senior Project.

In the future, we hope to purchase ~15 sets of binoculars to loan students on field trips and provide scholarship(s) to local high school seniors interested in pursuing degrees in conservation biology.

By donating to our all-volunteer organization, your dollars go directly to supporting our field trips, outreach presentations, nest box program, pollinator gardens, community weed pulls and local students. In addition, you will automatically become a member of our local chapter and have first option to join our events through our mailing list. We are excited to include you in all our fun activities!
