RAIN Rescue is operated by a group of volunteers (we have no paid staff) with the intent to tackle areas of animal care not currently being addressed in our community. We are the only rescue organization that serves Shingletown, Manton, Viola, Hat Creek, Whitmore and Old Station.  Our focus is rescuing lost, abandoned, abused, neglected, or unwanted animals. We primarily rescue cats, dogs, kittens, and puppies (including those who require bottle feeding). Once an animal enters our foster program it has a permanent place to stay until it finds a home. NO animal is euthanized (unless they are suffering beyond help). We are also dedicated to the spay and neuter of cats and dogs in our community, including feral cats who are voiceless and often ignored. As the community changes, we will continue to change in order to address any new issues.  We have found forever homes for over 3,000 cats and 300 dogs! In addition to our function of trapping feral animals and ensuring they are fixed we also support an animal sanctuary which hosts birds, reptiles, horses, goats, lamas, emus and a donkey, We also function as a community center and work to help make our community better in any way we can.

We collaborate with a broad range of organizations, including:

  1. Haven Humane Society in Redding and Animal Control Services.  Since we are a no-kill shelter people know that if we accept their animal if will be cared for.
  2. S.N.A.P. (Spay Neuter and Protect) is our sister group located in Palo Cedro.  We provided assistance for them as they became a non-profit and we routinely send them donations we can’t use but they want.
  3. Harmony Acres - an animal sanctuary which hosts birds, reptiles, horses, goats, lamas, emus and a donkey.
  4. Shasta Wildlife -  we are a go between for wildlife but we cannot host them.
  5. Bella Vista Sanctuary refers cats and dogs to us and we refer other animals to them.
  6. Webb Animal Sanctuary in Cottonwood specializes in rescuing dogs.  They have taken dogs from us and we have placed some of their dogs for them.
  7. Defiance Canyon Raptor Rescue – we refer and/or transport injured raptors to them.
  8. Tortoise rescue – they recently took a tortoise we found in the road.
  9. Wild Horse Sanctuary – we have a rescued horse and burro from them and also help them get spay, neuter and adoption services for cats and dogs dumped at their property.
  10. Kindred Hearts Transport Connection -  we work with them to transport animals anywhere in the US. We recently helped a member of our community whose wife passed away due to cancer and he needed to relocate his two dogs to Virginia.
  11. North State Cat Coalition – they have the same common goals we do. They work toward TNR for cats in our area.
  12. Pet Finders – they have been a tremendous partner for us.  It has quadrupled our adoptions and helped us find homes for hard to adopt animals (e.g., special needs pets). See https://www.petfinder.com/member/us/ca/shingletown/rescued-animals-in-need-rain-ca2626/ for a list our current pets up for adoption.
  13. Animal Resque Coalition – we coordinated with them during our fire evacuations to help people find a safe place for their large and small animals.
  14. Companion Animal Foundation – they help us place animals – especially exotic cats, like a Savannah, they have a great network to place rare cats.

We work closely with Dr. Sargent, a semi-retired Vet in Redding CA, who works part-time to spay/neuter/vaccinate the animals we bring him. He is very generous and only charges us the following amounts:
     Female Cat: $85 for spaying
     Male Cat: $45 for neutering
Dog spaying and neutering based on weight (between $120 and $220)
     Rabies vaccine: $15
     Selarid (Flea treatment): $15
     FVRCP vaccine for cats: $20
     DHLPP vaccine for dogs: $25
Microchipping included at no cost whenever an animal is fixed.

He also provides low cost dental treatments and other medical care  Our adoption fee for spayed or neutered pets is $50. We believe cats are happier when they have a buddy so if a pair are adopted the fee is waived for the second cat.  We make up the difference in cost through our RAIN RESCUE Thrift Store operations and by seeking out grants and community donations.  This additional support allows us to help more pets and pet owners.  Our phone is constantly ringing with people who need help with feral cats or cats they can no longer care for. The more funds we raise the more animals we can help.
