Organization Mission Statement:  No Kid Sleeps on the Floor in Our Town!

 Local Chapter: Redding, California

Description of Current Program: Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) is a nonprofit organization that has a simple yet powerful goal: to ensure that no kid in our community has to sleep on the floor. We understand that for children, having a comfortable and safe place to sleep is essential for their well-being, but unfortunately, many families experiencing poverty or other crises cannot provide this necessity. Our team of dedicated volunteers works tirelessly to build and deliver fully furnished twin-size beds to families in need. By providing a bed to a child who would otherwise be sleeping on the floor, we don't just give them a place to sleep, but also a sense of security, comfort, and dignity. We believe that every child deserves a good night's sleep and a chance to succeed, and we are committed to making that a reality for as many children as possible.

SHP is a national organization that operates with 350+ local active chapters across the United States.

The target population is any child aged 3-17 years who do not have a bed of their own.  The only criteria is that the child needs to be aged 3-17 years and not have a bed to sleep in each night.

When Steven Brooks and George Rhoderick learned of Sleep in Heavenly Peace and realized there were bedless children in Redding, California, they stepped up and took the initiative to learn how to start a chapter in “their town!” Steve & George established the CA-Redding Chapter of SHP in late 2024. Since launching their chapter, they have been fundraising, developing a core leadership team, and acquiring the necessary tool package, lumber, hardware, and materials to begin building and delivering beds in their initial service area.  Passionately embracing the SHP mission statement and fiercely addressing the emerging and persistent issue of child bedlessness, in “their town!” they anticipate providing at least 100 beds each year to local children in need of one of their own.  They are committed to finding families who are unable to get a bed for their children and providing that resource for them. It is a targeted intervention that can have profound and long-lasting effects.

Not only does the Redding Chapter work to deliver and assemble these beds, fully furnished (frames, mattresses, sheets, pillows, and blankets) to children in need; they partner with local organizations, churches, businesses, and community members to build them! Chapter leadership and their core team show volunteers how to take a pile of wood, and with drills, sanders, and saws, to construct twin bed frame components. SHP's simple design is easy to follow and takes no woodworking experience to learn. During SHP community "Build Days," volunteers learn about the organization, the need in "their town," and take pride in transforming piles of lumber into twin bed frames. Following each build day, volunteers help deliver the beds to local families that applied and qualified for one. SHP Build and Delivery Days facilitate community engagement by providing a fun and practical opportunity to volunteer their time.
