United Way of Northern California is a leading nonprofit and thought leader dedicated to helping Northern California residents build better lives. We do this by running and supporting programs that focus on the building blocks of a good quality of life: health, education, housing, and financial stability.

Our team is here for individuals and the entire community, not just in everyday circumstances but also during public emergencies, disasters, and other crises. From deploying emergency relief during wildfires to supporting families facing homelessness, we are committed to being a trusted partner when it matters most.

Why Giving Tuesday Matters:

On Giving Tuesday, your support helps ensure we can continue our critical work. Your donation will directly contribute to programs that provide emergency housing, disaster relief, education support, and essential resources for those in need. Together, we can help our community not only recover from challenges but also thrive in the face of adversity.

Join us in building a stronger, more resilient Northern California—because United is the Way we can overcome any obstacle.

Our Programs and Current Impact:

Disaster Relief and Recovery: United Way of Northern California is on the frontlines when disasters strike. During the recent Park Fire, we provided $209,622 in assistance to 82 households across our 9-county region. This support helped families replace essential furniture and appliances, secure housing deposits, and make critical infrastructure repairs — giving them the stability they needed to recover and return home.

In addition to responding to natural disasters, United Way of Northern California supports the community during times of crisis. With the current food insecurity challenges, we activated the Emergency Financial Assistance Program to help individuals and families affected by the SNAP shutdown. Since activation on November 14th, 2025, we have provided $100 gift cards to over 100 families and will continue to provide assistance to any eligible household to ensure community members can meet their basic needs during this difficult time.

The South Market Micro Shelter: Our innovative Micro Shelter Program has achieved an 80% success rate, helping residents transition from temporary shelter into more permanent housing solutions. This program provides a safe, stable environment while individuals and families work towards securing lasting housing, helping break the cycle of homelessness in Northern California.

Recovery Happens | Substance Use Disorder: Through our Recovery Happens initiative, we are committed to addressing the stigma surrounding opioid and stimulant use. Our educational outreach and capacity-building efforts empower communities to embrace evidence-based treatment and recovery practices. Together, we are breaking down barriers and fostering a supportive, inclusive environment for those facing addiction.

VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Program: Our VITA program provides free tax return filing for low- and moderate-income individuals and families, ensuring people keep more of what they earn. Each year, this service brings thousands of dollars back into our community, helping households strengthen their financial stability and plan for the future. During the most recent tax season, our team filed 919 federal returns, putting more than $1M back into the hands of North State residents.

211 NorCal: 211 NorCal is a free, confidential helpline and website that connects people with essential local resources — available 24/7 in multiple languages. From basic needs and mental health support to housing, employment, and disaster relief, 211 is often the first place people turn when they don’t know where to go.During disasters like the Park Fire, 211 has been a critical lifeline, providing timely information, guidance, and support to affected residents.

This year, 211 NorCal has: Supported 8,000+ calls, helping people find the resources they need. Made 21,000+ referrals, reflecting ongoing community demand. Reached 10,000+ website visitors with 44,000 page views, expanding access to vital information

North State Equity Fund: United Way of Northern California is committed to uplifting and supporting voices for racial justice, equity, and inclusion across the North State. Established in 2020, the North State Equity Fund strengthens organizations working to advance equal opportunity and build a more just region. Guided by our Anti-Racism Statement, the fund reduces barriers for equity-focused groups by simplifying the grant process and ensuring resources reach those doing the work on the ground. This year, through the North State Equity Fund, we invested $50,000 in 11 local organizations leading meaningful equity efforts in our communities.
